EV Charger Installation UK: How to Claim the New £500 Grant Before It Ends
EV Charger Installation UK: How to Claim the New £500 Grant Before It Ends

CHARGE SMARTER | REDUCE YOUR INSTALLATION COSTS | PLAN AHEAD
If you are considering ev charger installation UK customers now have access to increased government support. From 1 April 2026, the OZEV home chargepoint grant increased from £350 to up to £500 towards the purchase and installation of an eligible home EV charger.
The current scheme is open until 31 March 2027, although the government may change or end the scheme. If you are eligible, it makes sense to check your position now rather than leaving your application until the final weeks.
At UK Renewable & Electrical Solutions Ltd, we install smart EV chargers for homes, businesses and commercial properties across Tamworth, Staffordshire, the Midlands and nationwide. We can also help you consider how an EV charger could work alongside solar panels and battery storage.
What is the £500 EV charger grant?
The grant is provided through the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, commonly known as OZEV. It contributes towards the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint.
For the main residential grant:
- The grant covers 75% of the total cost.
- Support is capped at £500 per chargepoint socket.
- The application deadline is 31 March 2027.
- The charger must be eligible under the current OZEV-approved list.
- Installation must be completed by an OZEV-authorised installer.
- You must receive confirmation of eligibility before the charger is installed.
The grant is not normally paid directly into your bank account. Once the installation is approved and completed, the authorised installer claims the grant and deducts the approved amount from your invoice.
You can read the latest information in the official GOV.UK electric vehicle chargepoint grants guidance.
Who can claim the home chargepoint grant?
The main home chargepoint grant is aimed at people who rent their home or own and live in a flat. You may be eligible if you:
- Own and live in a flat.
- Rent and live in a residential property.
- Have a qualifying electric vehicle.
- Have designated private off-street parking.
- Have the legal right to use that parking space.
- Live in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.
- Use an eligible chargepoint and an OZEV-authorised installer.
Your vehicle must appear on the government’s list of OZEV-approved electric vehicles. This can include a new or used electric vehicle, a leased vehicle, a company car or a vehicle that you have ordered and expect to receive within three months.
You will need to provide evidence of your vehicle ownership, lease or primary-user status.
What if you have on-street parking?
There is a separate grant for households with on-street parking. To qualify, you must own or rent your home, have no access to private off-street parking and install an approved cross-pavement solution, such as a charging gully.
You will also need approval from your local council. This type of installation requires careful planning because the charging cable must not create a trip hazard or obstruct pedestrians.
The official on-street parking grant guidance explains the requirements in more detail.
Who is not eligible for the standard home grant?
The current home grant is not available to everyone. In particular, you are unlikely to qualify if:
- You own a standard house with a private driveway or garage.
- You live in a property where the landlord also lives, such as a lodger arrangement.
- You have already installed the chargepoint.
- You have previously claimed the EV Homecharge Scheme or a similar OZEV grant.
- You are moving house or planning to move.
- The chargepoint installation is mandatory under building regulations or a planning condition.
This does not mean you cannot have an EV charger installed. It simply means you may need to pay the full cost yourself or investigate a different scheme.
Before making arrangements, check the latest government eligibility requirements.
How to claim the £500 grant
The process is straightforward, but the order is important.
1. Check your eligibility
Confirm that you meet the property, parking and vehicle requirements. If you rent your home or own a flat, you will usually need permission from your landlord, freeholder, property manager or managing agent before applying.
Do not assume that permission will be granted automatically. Written approval may be requested by OZEV as part of its checks.
2. Choose an approved charger and installer
The chargepoint must appear on the current OZEV-approved chargepoint model list.
You must also use an installer listed as OZEV-authorised. This is essential for the grant to be valid.
A qualified installer should assess your consumer unit, cable route, parking position and available electrical capacity before recommending a charger. This helps ensure the installation is safe, compliant and suitable for how you will use your vehicle.
3. Obtain a clear quotation
Your quotation should explain:
- The charger model.
- The installation work included.
- Any required cabling, protection or consumer unit upgrades.
- The total price, including VAT.
- The grant amount, where applicable.
- The balance you will need to pay.
At UK Renewable & Electrical Solutions Ltd, we provide clear, no-obligation quotations and practical advice based on your property, budget and charging requirements.

4. Apply before installation
You apply through the relevant government grant portal. For the home grant, you will generally need information about your property, parking space, vehicle and installer.
Depending on your circumstances, supporting documents may include:
- A current utility bill.
- Your tenancy agreement.
- Written permission from your landlord or property manager.
- Written permission from a freeholder or managing agent.
- Your vehicle order form or proof of ownership.
- A quotation from an authorised installer.
Most importantly, do not install the charger before OZEV confirms that you are eligible. Installing too early could make the work ineligible for funding.
5. Have the charger installed and receive the discount
Once your application is approved, your installer can arrange the installation. After the work is completed, the installer submits the required evidence, including installation photographs and invoice details.
The approved grant is deducted from your invoice before the installer claims the money from OZEV.
Choosing the right EV charger for your property
A smart charger can make home charging more convenient and help you manage electricity costs. We supply and install a range of trusted chargepoints, including myenergi Zappi chargers.
The myenergi Zappi is a popular option because it can provide:
- Smart scheduling through an app.
- Fast charging when you need it.
- Charging timed around cheaper electricity tariffs.
- Solar-surplus charging when paired with solar PV.
- Monitoring and control of charging activity.
- Automatic adjustment to available household power.
A Zappi can be installed as part of a new solar project or added to an existing electrical system, subject to a suitable site assessment. Our electricians will explain the available options without pushing you towards equipment you do not need.

Can businesses claim up to £500 per socket?
Yes, but businesses use a different OZEV scheme from the residential home grant.
The Workplace Charging Scheme can provide eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations with:
- Up to £500 per socket.
- Support for up to 40 sockets across all sites.
There is also a separate chargepoint grant for eligible landlords, registered providers of social housing, public sector organisations and property management companies working for landlords. This can provide up to £500 per socket, with applications for up to 200 sockets across all sites.
For commercial projects, the design needs to consider more than the charger itself. We assess parking layouts, electricity demand, distribution boards, access control, load management and future fleet requirements. For larger workplaces, we can also advise on solar PV and battery storage to help reduce charging costs and grid dependence.
Combine EV charging with solar and battery storage
An EV charger can become even more useful when integrated with renewable energy.
Solar panels can generate electricity during the day, while a smart charger can direct surplus power into your vehicle instead of exporting it to the grid. A battery can store excess electricity for later use, including overnight charging or periods when solar generation is lower.
Our team can design a joined-up solution based on:
- Your daily mileage.
- Your vehicle’s charging capacity.
- Your current electricity tariff.
- Your roof space and solar potential.
- Your existing consumer unit and electrical supply.
- Whether battery backup or future expansion is important to you.
